Extracting Data from the Live Access to the National Virtual Ocean Data System (NVODS)

Step #1: Click Here to visit the NVODS web site

This page will allow you to select from the datasets organized into different categories:

Picture of Main LAS pag

Step #2: Click on the link: by Discipline (Atmosphere, Ocean, Surface Marine, Land Surface, Topography, Bathymetry)

You will see a list of the datasets organized by discipline:

Datasets organized by discipline

Step #3: Click on the link: Ocean to see oceanography relatated datasets:

Note: Variables shown are only the actual measured variables. These datasets often contain computed variables such as apparent oxygen utilization that can be easily recomputed in JOA. However, you are not restricted from selecting any variables you choose, but the resulting data product will be comensurately larger. If you are defining a large geographical area or many time steps (e.g., a monthly climatology), we recommend selecting only the variables you will actually use.
Step #5:  Select to variables that you want to include in the data file generated by the server and then click the "Next >" link:
Step #6: Select the geographic domain of the data product by dragging a selection rectangle on the map (use the handles to refine your selection):

Step #6 continued: The "view" should be set to "xyz volume" and the "output" as "NetCDF". Click  the "Next >" link to generate the datafile. Note: You can also select a subset of the depth range below the map panel. Note also that if you select variables that have different depth axes (e.g., chlorophyll and dissolved oxygen), the depth ranges changes to smallest range of the selected variables.
Step #7: A blank, untitled window pops up while the data file is downloaded. The downloded file will be named "LASoutput.nc." You should change the name to something more indicative of it's content. In this example, I named the file "Ind_2001_annual.nc." Note: these files can be large (e.g., this example is 8.8MB), so download times may be significant depending upon your level of internet service.
