Storm 2006 Animated Movie
I have produced a 2.5 minute animated map of the December 2006 wind
storm that knocked out power for all of Vashon and Maury Islands.
The storm hit the island in earnest, late in the evening of Thursday,
December 14th and by early morning on the 15th, all power was out. Due
to widespread damage, it took over a week to power restore to most of
the island. I was curious about the big picture view of the outage and
how power was restored so I conceived of doing an animated map with
data provided by members of the Vashon-Maury community.
I received almost 375 power outage reports but the final animation only
uses 330 observations. I had to discard some reports because of
incomplete or faulty data. In addition, I had to coalesce multiple reports
from one address into one.
Notes on the animation:
• You will need Apple Quiktime Player or the QuickTime plugin
installed in your browser to view the movie. You can obtain a player or
the plugin for your PC or Mac at:
www.apple.com/quicktime
If you have a Mac or a PC with iTunes installed, you probably already have QuickTime installed.
• The download size is around 3.8 MB.
• Each Frame of the movie represents 1 hour of time.
• When power is restored, the symbol "flashes" with a bigger, brighter
symbol (Thanks to Steve Graham for this suggestion), after 1 hour the symbol
returns to normal size and brightness.
• Drag the "scrub" control to make the movie go faster/slower or go back in time.
Click the graphic to download or play the movie. If you have the plugin installed, the movie should just play.
